It depends on circumstances and possible competition with other Halloween costumes from other kids and your desire to show the best costume. Also, even on a low budget it's possible to create a very nice costume, if you're willing to put some effort in it. It depends if you're good with thread and needle and if you have some imagination to create something interesting. While it's okay to spend some cash on a nice outfit, things become way more fun if you keep a low bidget and work together with your child to create something by yourself. With some old, wide clothes, an old hockeymask and one large cup from an old bra with a thick layer of paint as skullcap and you can already create something interesting. So I would add plenty of creativity to the budget. :-) If you don't have any, compensate for it with additional cash. |

I'll say my oldest is 5 and I've never spent over $30 on a costume, sometimes we enhance them with wigs or makeup and such from home. As with all budgeting matters it depends on your income but the kids will have fun no matter what you spend. People spending more than they're comfortable with is probably more from social pressure than making kids happy. |

I guess it's a tradeoff between time and money. I've seen some very elaborate costumes that probably didn't cost much, but I know they took a lot of time. This will date me, but I went as a Rubik's Cube. The costume was a box with construction paper taped on the sides. Probably cost all of 25 cents! You can probably do a pretty good robot or tin man with a can of spray paint, a box, some flexible black drainage pipe, and a funnel. Creativity goes a long way to making the whole thing cost less. |
