I have contributions and trades setup to automatically purchase stock on the 3rd tuesday of the month and I believe the transaction rate is $4 a trade which is quite good. You can also make real time trades it'll cost more. It really depends on your investing style, since you're asking the question I assume you're a beginner and I think sharebuilder works quite well for those just starting out.
http://www.ourluckydime.com/questions/110/which-online-broker-should-i-use/118#118 Answer by Dan for Which Online Broker should I use Dan 2009-10-15T15:32:22Z 2009-10-15T15:32:22Z
What do I use?

E*Trade.

Simple, fantastic support both on and off the site, good research sections, and an iPhone app that works very nicely.

Oh, and SmartMoney (the magazine) rated them the #1 Online Broker.
http://www.ourluckydime.com/questions/110/which-online-broker-should-i-use/132#132 Answer by unknown (google) for Which Online Broker should I use unknown (google) 2009-10-21T14:50:32Z 2009-10-21T14:50:32Z
Zecco is good if you are looking for a discount broker with low commissions, low minimum balances, and if you are Web savvy. When I called representatives on the phone, sometimes the accents were hard to understand.

SogoTrade has even lower commissions ($3), but they have a higher account minimum to open an account: $500.
